Abstract

Romans 5:16 presents a contrast between the condemnation resulting from Adam's transgression and the justification achieved through Christ. This study aims to elucidate the concept of justification in Romans 5:16 by employing an exegetical approach to the Greek text, a lexical analysis of the term δικαίωμα (dikaiōma), and an examination of the literary context of Romans 5:12–21. The study utilizes qualitative research with a historical-grammatical exegetical method. The findings indicate that δικαίωμα in Romans 5:16 is best understood as a "verdict of justification" rather than merely a "righteous act," thereby affirming the forensic nature of justification in Pauline theology. Although the "New Perspective on Paul" highlights the covenantal dimension, Romans 5:16 nonetheless emphasizes God's declarative act of justifying sinners through the work of Christ.
